Choosing Bird Nets for Balconies and Windows: A Guide for Mumbai Residents
Pigeons (locally referred to in Mumbai as kabutar) roost frequently on high-rise balconies, window sills, and building plumbing ducts. Beyond creating unpleasant noise and stains, their acidic droppings corrode stone, paintwork, and air conditioning coils while harboring pathogens.
Selecting the right anti-bird netting requires balancing three critical factors: mesh aperture size, polymer material durability under coastal sun, and visual transparency. Here is what property owners and society committees must know before procuring netting.
1. Selecting the Correct Mesh Aperture
Anti-bird netting is manufactured in standardized square aperture grids. The aperture must be small enough to block the bird's head and body, but large enough to allow full daylight and coastal cross-ventilation:
- 25mm × 25mm Mesh (Recommended for Pigeons): This is the industry-standard specification across Mumbai high-rises. It provides a 100% reliable physical barrier against common urban pigeons (Columba livia) and crows without feeling claustrophobic or cutting off natural breeze.
- 35mm × 35mm Mesh: Also suitable for mature pigeons. Uses marginally less polymer per square metre, making it lightweight for large-span multi-storey building plumbing shafts.
- 50mm × 50mm Mesh: Designed strictly for larger sea gulls, kites, or crows. Not recommended for urban balconies, as smaller pigeons can occasionally squeeze through or become entangled.
- 15mm–19mm Mesh: Tightly woven mesh required only if you have small sparrows nesting in wall cavities.
2. Comparing Monofilament Nylon vs. Braided HDPE
In our Masjid Bunder trade warehouse, we supply two primary polymer configurations:
| Factor | Transparent Monofilament Nylon | Braided High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) |
|---|---|---|
| Visual Appearance | Virtually invisible from 10–15 feet; preserves outdoor city and sea views. | Visible thin cords (white, green, or black); noticeable from inside. |
| Sunlight UV Resilience | High resilience when manufactured with UV inhibitors; 3–5 year service life. | Outstanding chemical and UV resilience; multi-filament structure handles 5–7+ years. |
| Tensile Knot Strength | Moderate; ideal for residential balconies and window bays. | Very high; excellent for large society courtyards and duct spans. |
| Best Application | Living room balconies, bedroom windows, residential apartments. | Building shafts, utility ducts, society common areas. |
3. How to Measure Balcony Openings Safely
To obtain an accurate quotation without paying for unnecessary excess material, you need the length and height of the void you want to cover.
Crucial Safety Warning
Never lean over balcony railings, climb on furniture, or sit on high-rise parapets to measure your balcony. Measurements can be taken completely from the safe interior floor using a standard tape measure along the floor skirting and adjacent side walls.
Follow these safe measuring steps:
- Measure the Length: Run your tape measure along the inside balcony floor from wall to wall. Note the measurement in feet or metres (e.g. 12 feet).
- Measure the Height: Measure vertically from the top of the parapet railing to the underside of the ceiling slab (e.g. 6 feet).
- Calculate Total Area: Multiply Length × Height (e.g. 12 ft × 6 ft = 72 square feet). Always add 10% to 15% allowance to accommodate border rope stretching and perimeter tensioning.
4. When to Use Bird Spikes Instead of Netting
Netting is designed to enclose open volumes. However, if your only issue is pigeons perching on a narrow 4-inch concrete window sill or sitting on top of an outdoor split-AC unit, full netting may be unnecessary. In those specific spots, installing 304-grade stainless steel bird spikes provides an immediate physical deterrent without framing your window.
5. Request an Itemized Netting Quotation
